The skill of being a surveyor is knowing what survey tool is correct for the clients budget taking into consideration accuracy and office processing time versus field time. We use traditional methods when most accurate or economical for our clients needs. Large and difficult conditions may require more advanced tools to mitigate tight time windows and/or safety. For example this UK beach and seawall defence survey which required both traditional methods including everything from field book, tape measures, Total Stations and RTK GPS, through to more advanced methods of Point Cloud data derived from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
